know more about me, so welcome! When I
visit classrooms, I always tell my students to
start their stories close to the action, and
never to begin with I was born...

But in case you're interested in where I was

If you know nothing at all about me, it may or
may not interest you to know I am a poet,
children's book author and freelance writer. I
have published hundreds of articles in local,
regional and national publications, plus 20
nonfiction children's books and three young
adult verse novels with Simon & Schuster.

FAQs

Q: Why do you write novels in verse?

A: Poetry is an interior form of writing. I like to get into my characters' heads and
take a good look around. Poetry helps me do that.

Q: Why do you write "problem" novels?

A: I feel it's important to be a voice for people who experience problems like
addiction or thoughts of suicide, and hopefully help them realize they're not alone
and that there's help if they just go looking for it. Besides, problem novels are much
more interesting to write.

Q: Will you ever write prose or genre fiction?

A: No doubt. I've got lots of books inside of me, just waiting to escape. If prose or
genre better suits the story, I'm there!

Q: Will you write more nonfiction?

A: Absolutely. I've got a nonfiction book project in the works right now, in fact.

Q: From where do you draw inspiration for your stories?

A: From many places. Family. Friends. In the news. And now, from readers.

Q: Will you write a third book in the CRANK/GLASS series?

A: Probably, but there will be two others first. IDENTICAL publishes in August
of 2008. And I'm currently writing TRICKS, about teen prostitution.

Q: Will there be sequels to BURNED or IMPULSE?

A: I never planned sequels to these books, but have had many requests for them.
And I've late been thinking about a sequel to BURNED. Best answer: maybe!
